Chronic fatigue and long COVID are not willpower problems — they are biological ones. At Aim Health in Hoylake we address the underlying mechanisms: mitochondrial dysfunction, nervous system dysregulation, chronic inflammation and oxygen deficit. Here is how our therapies work together to break the cycle.

Chronic Fatigue and Long COVID: How Aim Health’s Therapies Help

Why persistent fatigue is not a willpower problem — and what science-backed therapy can actually do about the biology behind it.

Chronic fatigue is one of the most misunderstood conditions in modern medicine. People are told to rest more, pace themselves, push through carefully. But for the growing number of people living with persistent, unrelenting fatigue — whether triggered by COVID, another viral illness, burnout, or no obvious cause at all — these approaches simply do not touch it. The reason is that chronic fatigue is not a lifestyle problem. It is a biological one.

Why persistent fatigue is different from ordinary tiredness

Ordinary tiredness resolves with rest. Chronic fatigue does not — and this is the defining feature that separates it from simply being overworked or underslept.

When the body’s energy-producing machinery is impaired, when the nervous system cannot downshift into genuine rest, and when low-grade inflammation is running continuously in the background — rest becomes less restorative, not more. Sleep does not refresh. Recovery from any exertion takes far longer than it should. The simplest tasks require effort that feels entirely disproportionate.

In long COVID, there is an additional layer. Functional brain imaging studies have shown reduced blood flow and oxygen delivery to specific brain regions — a measurable physical finding that directly accounts for the brain fog, cognitive impairment and post-exertional malaise that characterise the condition. The brain is not receiving what it needs to function properly. That is not a psychological problem. It is a physiological one.

How Aim Health’s therapies address the underlying biology

At Aim Health in Hoylake we offer five therapies that work at the level where chronic fatigue and long COVID actually originate. Each one targets a specific part of the biological picture. Used together in a structured programme, they work in a way that none achieves independently.

The therapies and what they address

Hyperbaric oxygen and hydrogen therapy — restoring oxygen to the brain and body

In a pressurised chamber, oxygen dissolves into blood plasma and reaches brain tissue and peripheral cells that compromised circulation cannot adequately supply. The 2022 Nature RCT showed significant improvements in cognitive function, energy, sleep and pain in long COVID patients. Read our complete guide to hyperbaric oxygen and hydrogen therapy.

Red light therapy — restoring cellular energy production

Red and near-infrared light reaches the mitochondria inside your cells and directly stimulates ATP production — a targeted restoration of the exact energy-producing mechanism that breaks down in chronic fatigue. Whole body PBM also reduces systemic inflammation and supports sleep architecture.

Rebalance Impulse neurorelaxation — restoring nervous system balance

A body locked in sympathetic dominance cannot heal at the rate it is capable of. Rebalance Impulse uses applied neuroscience — Synchromotherapy light stimulation, binaural sound, guided neuromeditation and cardiac coherence breathing — to shift the nervous system into the parasympathetic state where genuine recovery becomes possible.

Whole body cryotherapy — resetting the inflammatory environment

Two to four minutes at minus 87 degrees Celsius triggers a powerful whole-body anti-inflammatory response — reducing the specific inflammatory signals elevated in post-viral illness and chronic fatigue. Regular sessions progressively lower the inflammatory baseline that keeps many people stuck.

Compression therapy — supporting circulation and lymphatic drainage

Chronic fatigue is associated with poor peripheral circulation and lymphatic dysfunction. Compression therapy supports venous return and tissue oxygenation, complementing the systemic improvements produced by the other therapies.

How the therapies work together

The therapies above are most powerful when used in combination — sequenced around the biology of recovery rather than the management of individual symptoms.

The starting principle is this: the nervous system has to shift first. Rebalance Impulse creates the parasympathetic foundation. Hyperbaric therapy restores the oxygen delivery the brain and tissues need. Red light therapy restores the cellular energy production that recovery depends on. Cryotherapy reduces the inflammatory burden. Compression supports the circulation that all of the above depend on.

The nervous system has to shift first. Rebalance Impulse creates the parasympathetic foundation. Hyperbaric therapy restores oxygen. Red light restores cellular energy. Together they address the cycle — not just individual symptoms.

What to expect

Recovery from chronic fatigue and long COVID is rarely linear. Most clients notice meaningful change within the first two to four weeks — improved sleep, clearer thinking, more stable energy. Sustained improvement builds across a programme of weeks as the biology that has been disrupted gradually restores.

The first step is a free 30-minute wellness assessment. A proper conversation about your history, your symptoms, what you have already tried, and what a programme would realistically look like for you. No obligation. Just clarity about what might actually help.

Frequently asked questions

Is this suitable if I have been diagnosed with ME/CFS?
Yes — the biological mechanisms we address are the same whether the diagnosis is ME/CFS, long COVID, post-viral fatigue or burnout-related chronic fatigue. We always recommend continuing with any existing medical care alongside your programme at Aim Health.
Is it safe if I experience post-exertional malaise?
Yes — none of our therapies require physical exertion. Hyperbaric therapy involves sitting comfortably in a pressurised chamber. Red light therapy involves lying still. Rebalance involves reclining in a zero-gravity bed. Cryotherapy involves standing for two to four minutes. None of these trigger post-exertional malaise.
Can I come if I am still functioning but not thriving?
Absolutely — many of our clients are managing daily life but not at the level they were before their illness. You do not need to be severely affected to benefit from the programme.
Do you work alongside GPs and specialists?
Yes — we encourage clients to keep their GP and any specialists informed. Our therapies are non-invasive, safe alongside medication, and do not conflict with conventional treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies considerably depending on severity and duration of illness. We discuss this fully at your free wellness assessment. Most clients attend 1 to 2 sessions per therapy per week in the initial phase.
